Homeschool Day At The Capitol 2025

How flexible is your homeschool schedule? Does a field trip to our state’s capitol interest you? Are you concerned how our elected officials see homeschooling? Perhaps this year you can take the time to visit Jefferson City during Homeschool Day. Mark your calendar for March 4, 2025.

Homeschool Day at the Capitol is fast approaching. What a great field trip day, and all hours count towards Social Studies, core. The FHE (Families for Home Education) program starts at 12:15 in the beautiful Capitol Rotunda with music from one of our homeschool groups, Play & Sing His
Praises from Springfield, MO. If you have not heard them before, you are in for a treat. Then the program will start at 12:30 and run until around 2:00 pm. Their lobbyist will give an update on what is happening in Jefferson City in regard to bills that may affect our homeschool law. And they will have visits from legislators, most who were either homeschooled as children and/or are homeschooling their own children. These legislators are in the trenches with you and know exactly what you are dealing
with. Come hear the words of encouragement. They will also have a Q&A time towards the end if time allows.
However, sitting for a couple hours with young children may not be best for you. Don’t stress. Set up a tour of the Capitol, but call early since these fill up quickly.
You can visit your legislators and let them know you are there for the day. They love to see families. Homeschoolers are a valuable voting voice, so don’t be afraid to let them know you are at the Capitol and introduce your family to them. Contact them at least 2 weeks ahead of time to get on their calendar. They can introduce your family in the floor chamber or arrange for you to go to the top of the dome. If you are not sure who your state legislators are, this is a helpful link.
And there are 2 amazing museums on either side of the Rotunda. Also, go to the Secretary of State’s Office for a free copy of the Missouri Constitution. It’s a terrific addition to your homeschool library and resources.
The Supreme Court Building is on High Street across from the Capitol. You can schedule a tour ahead of time. Also, the State Highway Patrol Safety Education Center and Museum is on East Elm and tours can be scheduled there as well, but may require at least 10 in the group. The Governor’s Mansion also has tours that you can schedule. It’s just a block or so down the street from the Capitol, a leisurely walk without having to find another parking place.
Food is also something to consider. There is a café in the basement of the Capitol. There is not a lot of seating and closes at 2:00pm sharp. There are also some restaurants within walking distance if you want to head out. If you are thinking of bringing a picnic lunch for your family or as a group, you can contact the Office of Administration, 573-751-2971, to ask if they will allow you to do that outside on the Capitol lawn (pay attention to the weather at that time of year). And your car/van is also an option for a picnic lunch.
And speaking of parking, arrive early. Parking can be a bit tricky, so you have to plan for it. If you are in Metered Parking, don’t forget your quarters.
